POSITION OVERVIEW


Position Overview:

Technical work in the installation, troubleshooting and repair of PC's, computers and related data processing equipment providing technical assistance in development needs, purchases, and software support for various applications.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the Systems Support Manager or Production Support Manager.  

Essential Job Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position.  The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude then from the classification if the work is similar, or a logical assignment for this classification.  Other duties may be required or assigned.

  • Operate and monitor operations of the computer center; coordinate the activities of computer components, such as central processing, multiplexers, tape drives and controllers, and others; operate different combinations of components for individual jobs; select the proper input and output data for each project. 
  • Manage and troubleshoot data network; install and connect network terminals.
  • Monitor computer system production runs to detect hardware and software malfunctions, correct operating errors.
  • Perform incremental and full system backups as required.
  • Perform system reloads, restores, and file recovery procedures.
  • Maintain written maintenance and operations records.
  • Assist in the installation, wiring, and removal of computer equipment, terminals, and related peripheral devices.
  • Monitor environmental conditions to ensure the proper system operations; diagnose system problems; evaluate project input data during computer runs.
  • Act as liaison between computer center and users.
  • Install and wire computer terminals, personal computers, modems, multiplexers, power supplies, printers, and related computer equipment; test equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Resolves software problems.  Applies Corrective Service Diskettes to upgrade software.
  • Runs diagnostics and determines possible hardware problems and repairs in house.  Performs network hardware problem analysis and corrections.
  • Assists in ordering network and peripheral devices.
  • Determines and solves networking problems.  Installs network devices, prints servers with PCLP, domain controllers and alternate servers with LAN Server.
  • Performs data transfer of PC's hard drive to the server.
  • Installs communications equipment and associated software.
  • Installs and helps implement network applications and test personal computer hardware and software.
  • Evaluates software and tests, upgrades network devices and trains users.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Additional Functions:

  • In the event of a declared state of emergency, employees in this classification may be called to work during days or hours other than those for which they are regularly scheduled.

 

Job Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • Associates degree from an accredited college or university in a technology related field or related field. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job may be substituted for the education and experience requirement.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

  • Knowledge of the capabilities, limitations of microcomputer equipment, computers, operating systems and application software and functions.
  • Knowledge of computer techniques and philosophy of office automation.
  • Knowledge of the technology and theory of data communications and local area networking.
  • Knowledge of host system fundamentals, its operating system, and data base facilities.
  • Knowledge of software/hardware that interacts with host computers.
  • Knowledge of networking software/hardware.
  • Knowledge of LAN concepts and terminology DOS LAN requester.
  • Knowledge of VMS, DCL, Windows, Unix, Pathworks and other operating systems.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to procedures and policies.
  • Ability to communicate in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Ability to interact with users.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner.
